Here we go again with Senator Jeff Wentworth, R- San Antonio insisting to pass his concealed carry gun in universities bill as an amendment this time. Wentworth filed a bill that would allow concealed-handgun license holders to carry gun on campus. The bill, lost support after constituent pressure even though it seemed likely to pass without much opposition at the beginning of the session. But it seems like Wentworth don’t want to listen to the people who are going to be affected by his bill the most, the students. Last week, Wentworth surprised senators when he proposed an amendment that would include his defeated bill into the higher education bill by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo. Zaffirini’s bill could help save universities millions of dollars by reducing reporting requirements and in turn translate into lower tuition fees. After Wentworth proposed his amendment, Zaffirni pulled her bill down leaving the higher education debate unfinished. This silly act of blocking bills that would actually save our higher education some money by proposing an amendment that was already defeated is what our broken system does not need right now. As president Obama mentioned in his press conference after releasing his birth certificate, we do not have time for these “silliness” whether it is the birth certificate or concealed carry bill. Senators should have better stuff to do than running around like a kindergarten child trying to get what they want no matter what the consequences are. Senator Wentworth just cost taxpayers millions of dollars by killing Zaffirni’s bill with his non popular amendment. But who really cares? At the end of the day, carrying a gun is the most important thing in Texas, isn’t it?
